Prof. Dr. Simon White

Prof. Dr. Simon White is one of the directors of the MPA and is Honorary Professor of Astrophysics at the LMU. He also holds Research Professorships at the University of Arizona, USA and the University of Durham, UK. He obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge (1977) and held faculty positions at the University of California at Berkeley, at the University of Arizona and at the University of Cambridge before moving to the MPA in 1994. His research focusses on the formation, evolution and structure of the Milky Way, of more distant galaxies, of galaxy clusters, and of larger systems. He has been particularly interested in clarifying the nature, amount and distribution of dark matter, and he was one of the originators of the Cold Dark Matter paradigm which dominates current theoretical thinking in this field. More recently he has become involved in studies of structure in the Cosmic Microwave Background and (together with R. Sunyaev) has established the MPA as the German node for analysis and interpretation of data from ESA's proposed Planck Surveyor satellite.
