Prof. Dr. Andreas Burkert

Andreas Burkert holds the chair for computational astrophysics at the university of Munich since 2003. He got his doctoral degree from the University of Munich (1989) and then went on a Feodor Lynen Fellowship to the University of Illinois, Urbana (1989-1990) and to the University of California, Santa Cruz (1990-1991). In 1991 he joined the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in Garching as a staff member and in 1995 accepted an offer from the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg to build a new theory group. In 1995 he also received the Habilitation.


Research interests:

  • Nature of dark matter and structure of dark matter halos.
  • Formation and evolution of galaxies.
  • Formation of molecular clouds and phase transitions in the interstellar medium.
  • Formation of stars and planets.
  • Computational astrophysics
  • Construction of special hardware for fast computations
