He holds a doctoral degree in astronomy from Hamburg University (1977). In 1977/78 he was working at Hamburg Observatory on problems of stellar stability and contact binaries. In 1978 he joined MPA as a postdoc, working mainly in the field of stellar structure and evolution, in particular on the evolution of close binaries with compact components. In 1984 he accepted a postdoctoral position at Munich observatory where he also got his habilitation degree in 1986. In 1989 he was offered a staff position the MPA and was awarded the degree of Privatdozent at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. Since 1. June 2010 he retirede but continues working at MPA as guest scientists.
