Joe Mohr holds the chair of structure formation and cosmology at the Physics Department of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and is an Associated Chair at MPE since 2009. He received his bachelors degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990 and his PhD in Astronomy from Harvard University in 1995 working on X-ray and optical studies of clusters with Prof. Margaret Geller and Dr. Dan Fabricant. After postdoctoral studies with Professor August Evrard at the University of Michigan, Dr. Mohr was awarded a Chandra Fellowship that he took to the University of Chicago to work with Prof. John Carlstrom on SZE studies of galaxy clusters. In 2000 he moved to the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL to take up an assistant professorship in the Astronomy Department and the Physics Department. He spent his first sabbatical at MPE as a Humboldt Fellow in 2007 and moved permanently to München two years later.
