Guinevere Kauffmann obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom in 1993. After one year as a Miller Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley, she came to Munich, first as as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institut fuer extraterr. Physik, then at the Max Planck Institut fuer Astrophysik (MPA). In 2003, she was awarded a tenured position as a C3 research group leader. She was appointed scientific director at MPA in 2013.

Research interests:

Kauffmann's work has focused on the formation and evolution of galaxies and their central super-massive black holes. Her work spans both theory and observations and has developed our understanding of how the study of galaxy populations can constrain theory.

For her research, she has received the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society (1997), the Maier-Lebnitz prize of the German Science Foundation (2002) and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz prize of the German Science Foundation (2007). She was elected to the American Academey of Arts and Sciences in 2009 and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2010. She has also received the Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) of the Federal Republic of Germany.
