Andreas Burkert holds the chair for computational astrophysics at the university of Munich since 2003. He got his doctoral degree from the University of Munich (1989) and then went on a Feodor Lynen Fellowship to the University of Illinois, Urbana (1989-1990) and to the University of California, Santa Cruz (1990-1991). In 1991 he joined the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in Garching as a staff member and in 1995 accepted an offer from the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg to build a new theory group. In 1995 he also received the Habilitation.
Research interests:
- Nature of dark matter and structure of dark matter halos.
- Formation and evolution of galaxies.
- Formation of molecular clouds and phase transitions in the interstellar medium.
- Formation of stars and planets.
- Computational astrophysics
- Construction of special hardware for fast computations
