Dr. Paola Andreani

Paola Andreani is Head of the Faculty and of the Office for Science at the European Southern Observatory. She studied Physics at the University of Rome (Italy) - both the University degrees and the PhD in Physics, working on observations from Antarctica of the Cosmic Microwave Background.

During her PhD she spent two year at the Institut d’Astrophysique in Paris. She has been Fellow at ESO, Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max-Planck Institut for Extraterrestrial Physics,
Assistant professor at the University of Padova (Italy) and Associate Astronomer at INAF Padova and Trieste.

She has been co-investigator for the PACS/HERSCHEL instrument at MPE and European ALMA Regional Centre Manager at ESO. She has been responsible for the ESO member states for ALMA operations building the network of European institutes participating in ALMA and heading the ARC department at ESO since 2006.

  • Evolution of Galaxies and the ISM
  • Observational cosmology
  • Formation and evolution of galaxies and QSOs
  • Far infrared and submillimetric extragalactic backgrounds
